Philosophy

The human voice is the most diverse of all musical instruments! Every voice is unique because every person is unique. This diversity is acknowledged as each individual singer is helped to understand how their instrument functions, incorporating the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects as a whole.

For the singer, the whole body is the instrument, so awareness of all of the body’s systems is maintained. The focus is on understanding how overall health and wellbeing supports vocal expression, ensuring that unnecessary muscle tension is reduced so that efficient use of necessary muscles can occur.

Artistic and performance freedom is then overlaid on this healthy technique. Students are encouraged to interact with song texts, interpreting and personalising them for optimal authenticity in performance. Training in microphone technique and stage presentation also occurs, including an understanding of how to manage performance anxiety.

Regular performance opportunities exist for singers to practise managing their instrument and their nerves. These events are designed to be a safe environment in which a successful performance experience is guaranteed. There are four Performance Workshops per year, at which singers perform for one another and provide positive feedback. These lead up to the two Concerts held per year, allowing singers to invite friends and family along to celebrate their progress. Both the workshops and the recitals are divided into beginners and advanced sections.
